I love surprises….especially a good one….especially when it comes to food…
Some time ago I was taken to a surprise dinner by a gentleman who writes and talks like he came from a Jane Austen’s novel. It was so unexpected and random. I was told that we would be having a casual dinner at a particular restaurant in Neutral Bay but then there was a sudden change of plan. I had no idea it was going to be a dinner at Sepia. If I did I’d probably would have worn a nice dress, skipped afternoon tea and most importantly, brought my newish-then camera along. With no camera at hand I had to make do with my Galaxy S3. It struggled a bit under the low light as you could probably tell looking at some of the pictures.
Anyhow, I was taken by how casual and relax this three hat restaurant feels— bare wooden table, lounge seating and plush leather chairs….Very cosy.
That night the service was nothing short of outstanding. I found the staff to be highly knowledgeable, professional and attentive. We had the degustation menu. It was the only menu available on Saturday night. We asked for a printed menu and a it was given to us inside an envelope. It was designed such that we could pull out the menu card just enough to reveal the dishes one by one as they are being served.
It was quite an experience….
Yes I had favourite dishes of the night (John Dory, Blackmore Wagyu and the Chocolate Forest) and least favourite dish (the Cheese).
However, overall it was a spectacular and an inspiring meal. I could not envisage attempting to cook any of the dishes my home kitchen. I think that shows how good a fine dining restaurant really is….well, for me anyway. Here, it was all about creative and innovative cooking. 4 hours and 11 incredible dishes later, Sepia was everything I expected and more.
Enough reminiscing….I can’t wait to go back….
PS. I think I may have found a real-life Mr.Darcy…..
